Kinugawa Turbo's Any Good?

Hi Guys,

Long story short I want to ditch the sequentials on the FD and go to a single. I am just aiming for 300-350 because I daily the car and dont want anything crazy.

Following Mzopyrus' youtube tutorial I have calculated my Mass Flow Rate requirement to be 36lb/min, 027kg/sec or 0.23kg/m3 depending on the chart units. I've calculated my pressure ratio as 1.9. Please let me know if you think any of these are massivly wrong.

After looking at many choices and if I was willing to spend upwards of £2000 on a turbo, the Garret G25-650 looks ideal. After looking at my options the Kinugawa TD04HL with IWG caught my eye. Its rated for 1.4l to 2.0l petrol and 300-350bhp. Looks good and in terms of specs the A/R is identical (0.49) to the Garret on the 7cm version.

However, when I place my values on Kinugawa's compressor chart I am knowhere near the mark. In fact my air flow ratio is so high it recommends their largest TD07 turbo which to put into perspective can make close to 700bhp.

Are kinugawas' charts just bad or am I doing something wrong?.Also, any reviews of the brand will be well recieved. I know they have only been around 12 years.

Thanks,

Note: Pressure ratio calculated with 300bhp as target. You can see the Garret has some nice headroom for more bhp while remainig efficient.

You should search the single turbo section. I think there’s a stickied thread on sizing for rotaries as rotaries have much more thermal energy than a piston engine. Basically, I’m saying reading hp numbers from a turbo is different between piston and rotary engines, and you’ll pick a large one rated for 6-700hp, and make 500, just random numbers I threw out.

When I saw you list a td04 16g turbo, my first thought was that’s tiny. I have a Subaru sti and that turbo would be suitable for that, and even 16g is small as most guys run at least a 20g.

Yeah, rotaries need bigger turbos.
gt25 and td04 are tiny.
need more like gt35 and a big exhaust housing.
Mamba turbo is pretty much the same company but better. (The company split), but there are affordable options from Borg Warner and others.
have a wander down the rabbit hole in the single turbo section on here. Theres 20 years of knowledge from 1000's of ppl
