Intermittent on and off of dash cluster and tail lights, smoke came from the dash

I am a new RX7 owner I have a 1986 FC. While driving my both my dash cluster and lights for the radio and my tail lights would intermittently turn on and off while driving down the road (headlights, brake lights, and blinkers worked perfectly normal). I pulled off on the side to check some things, then when I started the car back up again and turned on the lights I drove maybe 15 feet and they went out again and smoke started to come out of the dash on the drivers side from just behind the dash cluster and just to the left of it through the vents. Does anyone have any ideas to what caused this to happen?

When you state the cluster goes out, do you mean the illumination or all functionality?

The headlight/dimmer switch is known to go bad and often burn up the switch and harness.
