V-mount is the best position as far as allowing cooling to the radiator and short pipe lengths, but requires considerable work on the front end to make things fit as well as a vented hood.
Typical FMIC mounting is easier, but can introduce cooling problems and means a lot more pipe. The FD has an undersized cooling system from the factory.

It all depends on the use of the car. FMIC is good for drag racing but not good for road racing. V-mount is ideal for road racing and severe street conditions but like Aaron said, setting one up is not a trivial undertaking. SMIC is pretty good for everything except highly modified setups.
The intercooler of choice for each application again depends on the build. Two things I can confirm though: crap intercoolers are crap and poor ducting will make an expensive intercooler perform worse than stock.

^ I disagree. Nothing inherently 'attractive' about any intercooler over the other types. And any of them can look nice if done properly with a little attention to detail....and look like *** if not.
As mentioned, it depends on the use of the car, but for most owners, the SMIC is simple, effective and least expensive.
