I have what feels like an unsolvable problem

I just recently bought an automatic 85 fb gsl (with only 57k miles!) and I had known that it had some kind I'd fuel management issue due to that the previous owner said it would start and run for ab 5 min and then shut off, however on the way back from picking it up we had gotten it to run and I had driven it for the last 2 hrs of the way home... The next day it was having the issue the last owner had described. I had assumed that it was just gonna be a simple vapor locking issue, and that I could move the fuel filter closer the the gas tank and also wrap the lines. When I went to do that I noticed in the old filter there was heaps of dark brown muck, as well as I noticed I couldn't really move it further back considering the tank was RIGHT THERE... I checked the carb, and found that the secondary jets (the larger, cruising ones) weren't spraying any gas at all, and also noticed that one float was significantly lower than the other. The previous owner had found another manual 85 fb and took its carb off it thinking he could just swap it out but he had never gotten to it. So I compared the air flows between both carbs' jets and figured I sold swap them since I didn't have any carb cleaner at the time. Then I noticed the air pump wasn't connected and figured it could be possible that a vacuum issue could prevent the secondary jets from working so I bought a new belt and put it on, and then it started acting even worse, so I took off the belt again. The car at this point sounds great and when it did drive for that short you're it feels like it has much more power, but usually right after giving it gas it just either loses all fuel pressure or something and the power just falls flat on its face. I have one last suspicion, and that is that it could be a timing issue as well, but I don't have a light and nor do I know anyone with one and I haven't gotten around to getting one yet. Please if you've ever had this issue or have any ideas that I should check out, some help would be greatly appreciated.

the air pump just blows air into the exhaust during a cold start to aid in emissions- ignore it and dont hook it up. Remove the air filter and look at the carb from the top while you pump the accelerator, you can do this at the carb. Make sure its pumping gas as you move the throttle. If not it is leaning out as you open the throttle. Will run fine at speed, but wont accelerate. If its not pumping, the pump plunger is either clogged or the Oring at the bottom is bad. You may be able to get it to rev if you give it gas slooooooly, like over 4 or 5 seconds. If it ran good before, its not likely timing.

So altogether I need to rebuild it? The smaller jets are flowing excellently when I rev it at the carb but as soon as I put load on the engine (after its warmed up for some odd reason...?) The power dies instantly when I apply throttle. As far as I can tell it looks like the accelerator cable '"allows" the larger butterfly valves to open but that is regulated by vacuum. So ive ruled out that problem and decided im going to buy a carb rebuild kit this weekend and re do it all. Should that be the issue or should I look more into it?

This is bad advice if you have a cat in the exhaust. The air pump is used to help the catalytic converter burn excess fuel. Without it, the cat will burn out.

I believe the main issue is that the gas tank is full of rust and muck. Drain the tank with the plug on the bottom and clean/reseal the tank. You can clean the tank yourself or take it to a radiator shop that does cleaning. Don't forget to blow out/clean the fuel lines. Replace all fuel filters. When the tank is down, might as well replace all the rubber fuel lines.
