Hi, Trying for a S5 13b turbo swap

Hey, I have had my '88 RX-7 for around a year now and i think i am ready to start upgrading. Its a N/A GTU and i am thinking about swapping for a S5 turbo engine. Just wondering what it all entails and needs to be done. Can i just drop it straight in? Or do i need to do some other things?

It is much easier to swap the same series, such as since you have a S4 (1986-1988) it is easier to use a S4 Turbo motor if you want or need to do a swap.

Also the S4 rotors are stronger and last longer than the S5 and later versions, as well as you won't have to worry about the MOP (Metering Oil Pump) issues with the electrical MOPs that the S5 and later models have.

There are a lot of swaps covered in the technical section and FAQ's as well as all over the internet, but the amount you are willing to spend will determine what parts you need.

At the very least to do the swap you will need a S4 or S5 Turbo long block and engine wiring harness (or modify your existing engine harness) and some sort of either factory or aftermarket ECU (engine computer) and a Turbo hood (or a front mount intercooler if you retain your stock hood).

Then it is recommended that you also replace the transmission, drive shaft, differential/rear end assembly and the half shafts with their Turbo versions.

Of course if you replace the transmission you will also need to replace the starter, flywheel, clutch slave cylinder, and mounts.

Generally I also recommend replacing the front springs as well since the Turbo engine and transmission combo adds about 100 lbs to the front end of the car.

As far as the swap goes, a good mechanic can do a full (all the above mentioned items) swap, easy in a weekend, but your average shade tree mechanic may take longer.

I took a look at some of the ECUs in the forums. What would be a good one?
