help finding what this plug is and where it goes

Here are some pics of my problem.I have a 1989 s5 vert i am having problems passing emissions here in Indiana high HC it was at 399 the first test took it to the shop had 2 new cats put on .I went back failed again 199 on HC a little better. So i started to look things over under hood and in FSM i checked smog pump and it was working .I was going to check the secondary injection and i found what look like it was a plug that was broke off or never connected after motor rebuild from previous owner . i cant seem to find any wires hanging down anywhere to show it was connected. I thank it could be Port air solenoid valve or split air solenoid valve but im not sure. I need to know what it is and where it plugs into and where i can get one.

That's really not descriptive enough to even guess what plug you're talking about. If you post a picture of the plug, I can tell you what it is.

It's part of the Air Control Valve which has two solenoids screwed into it and that hole is where one of the solenoids goes to. In your case it is the Port Air solenoid which is used during the first 20,000 miles on the odometer then shuts off for the next 80k then turns back on at 100k til 120k then turns back off. Used for emissions only. On an S5 the PortAir solenoid would have two wires connected to it. One wire is B/W (has voltage w/key to on) and the other is Blue (L) and has ground on it when it is working as described above or otherwise it would have voltage on it w/key to on.

Post #1. One on the right is Port Air solenoid. Other one (left side of ACV) is the Split Air solenoid.

Ok so it should be off and it probably didnt have anything to do with failing emissions. I think i have about 40,000 0n rebuild but odometer shows 140,000.

Quote/ Yes. It's written in the online factory service manual. It's for allowing more air into the exaust ports during the first 20,000 miles to help keep the emissions cleaner.

If you want you can leave the poppet valve out and have it supply air anytime your running. That's EXTRA air to go along with the rest of the air from the airpump to the exaust ports. EXAUST PORTS, as in the exaust ports on the enginej just before the exaust manifold.

In other words it never again receives a ground signal from the ECU after 20,000 miles (with exceptions to the rule). It take a gnd signal to open them. 12vdc is always there with the key to ON or better.

You can't just leave the hole open, but you can remove the poppet valve off, which would then allow the air to pass through unobstructed.
