Hello from NC

I have owned some nice cars but this is my first RX-7. I ran across it by chance and couldn't pass it up. I have a 1987 GXL that I bought from the original owners and it only has 23,800 miles on it. It was always garaged and is in unbelievable condition. Everything worked except the ac and after driving it home I decided to put it on the road and just drive it since my truck only gets 14 mpg. I had to put new rear brakes on the car, replace the tires (dry rot) and actually converted the ac to accept new R13 and a new airr filter and I am off and running. I want to leave it as stock as possible ut the speakers aren't really that good. Any suggestions on what to replace them with?

Thanks,

BAMBAM

Well the stock A/C system is R12, so you need to either use R12 or one of the R12 replacements (such as Freeze12 or R12A)

You could use R134, but really if you go that route, to do it correct, you need to replace the rubber O rings and any soft parts (and probably the compressor since R134 is not as good as R12 and the RX-7 air conditioning on the 86-91 models was weak anyway).

Speakers will depend on what speaker and where. Most manufactures such as Sony, Pioneer and my favorite Alpine, make speakers that will drop into all the stock locations in the FC (2nd Gen RX-7).

Update

My 2005 nissan Titan has been parked ever since I first drove this thing. I put new tires, new rear pads and had the AC converted over to R13 and charged, cools great. All this for less than $600 and I love this car. I planned on selling but I may reconsider.

Sell

I haven't actually went through the numbers but I have driven it for over a week and I look forward to getting in it each time. The only down point I have noticed so far are too minor things. Everything works except the passenger side window is slower than the driver but it still works and the speakers are not blown just not the Bose I have been use to for 10 years now with my last 3 vehicles. I even took the spare tire yesterday and it was a little low on air but I simply inflated it and hopefully it holds. The sunroof, wipers, windows, radio, cruise control, washer sprayer on the front and back, the rear wiper and washer all work as they should. I have checked every car site and haven't found one with the miles as low as this one. I thought about listing it locally on Craigslist and see what interest there is but I would have to do some research to see what would be a reasonable askign price considering the mileage and condition. I also considered driving it for a couple of years to keep the mielage low on my truck and selling it with about 50,000 miles for around $4500 to $5500 because it would still be in excellent shape.
