Is it hard to find parts for '83 RX-7 ?

I'm looking to purchase an '83 RX-7 for my daughter to use while away at school but was wondering how hard it is to get parts for it? Any thoughts? She will be going to school in Utah. Thanks for your help.

Does your daughter know her way around cars? While any car from 1983 will have its problems, the 7 could have more then its fair share.

As I am in the process of buying an 83' rx7 and have been researching part availability online and locally and while mechanical parts are available body and interior are harder to find (Mazda has them at a high cost). Also being an 83 it will be carbureted, in general this means it WILL need adjustment from time to time and I believe (please correct if I'm mistaken) it will like mine have a manual choke. An RX7 of an early vintage may not be what you want to send her off with due to up keep, my advice is get her that as a summer/ at home car and a Civic as a dd for school.

i wouldnt recommend buying anyone who isn't at least slightly mechanically inclined a carbed rotary powered vehicle.
but if she is willing to either pay out the *** or do a lot of research for repairs/weird little problems then i would say go for it. they are awesome and cute little cars.

parts arent hard to come by if you know where to look (junkyards mostly, or online places like this where users are selling parts) new parts can be pretty pricey but are pretty easily obtainable for the most part.

Could not disagree more......I've got an '83 GS and it runs like a top!
Certainly, routine maintanece is very important (and pretty cheap).....but if Dad gets the car up to snuff (relpace fluids, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and filters), with a proper tune and a complete saftey check (brakes, belts, and alignment), there's no reason his dauther couldn't drive this car.
Biggest thing she'd need to learn is to keep the oil topped off (and changed regularly), don't let it overheat, and get used to how the car sounds while it's running correctly.

As far as parts go.....most stuff that wears out is pretty readily available, unless you need a new set of housings....then you're screwed...

what i meant by that is that these are not cars for people who don't have a freaking clue about vehicles -- the kind of people that don't even know how to change their own oil or check coolant hoses/belts for wear. you might be surprised how many people don't even know what kind of engine or drivetrain their vehicle has let alone how to recognize developing problems.

basically just make sure she's got a good head on her shoulders or this is probably not a good car for her. go for something disposable like a Sunfire.

^To add to this is an almost 30yr old car it will have some wear and tear on it not to mention the maintainance history is unknown as well.

Parts are usually easy to find, if you're like me get a parts car and keep it in the yard if you need parts.

mazdatrix.com
racingbeat.com

These guys are good and have most everything if you want new parts though they can be pricey. These cars are fine daily drivers once you sort out the bugs that they always have, I spent $1500 on my old SE when I first got it just to get it to run drive and work properly. But after that, it lasted me two and a half years and 20,000 miles with no problems besides routine maintenance before I sold it.

things like wheel bearings, CV joints, u-joints (although they claim they are non replaceable in the case of wheel bearings and driveshaft u-joints, mazda would make you buy a whole new hub or driveshaft) can be done at a machine shop
other things like brake calipers, slave cylinder, alternators, water pump etc you can find at any old place like NAPA.

the only things youre going to have trouble with are major drivetrain parts such as engine housings or a rebuilt transmission, they are going to cost you so much that you might as well just buy a new unit.
