guage cluster switches

i'm currently stripping my car for the rebuild. i want to remove the carpet so that i can re-dye it, but found out that the dash needs to be removed. Anyways, i need to remove the round buttons for the switches around the guage cluster. I'm gonna make one of them (the rear wiper switch, which i dont have) into a navigation unit override switch. So, does anybody know how to remove these buttons without breaking them? and, also, how do i re-install them? thanks

They just pull out.

What is a "navigation unit override switch"?

You can remove the carpet without removing the dash if you cut the area under the dash right down the middle while carefully sliding it out. It can then slide back into place without removing the dash as well.

you can install a switch to the navigation unit so that it will be "fooled" into letting you play movies or type in addresses while the car is moving. Otherwise, the car has to be parked. My friend hooked it up for me in my truck and i plan on doing the same for the rx7. i'll do a write up on how its done when i get to it, which wont be for awhile cause i still got to rebuild the motor, transmission, and a complete paint job.

what do you mean just pull them out? i tried pulling on it, but i feel like i'm gonna break something. I got the middle one out by pulling and twisting counterclockwise gently but firmly, but now i can't put it back in. i have to use these buttons again, so can you clarify more on how to pull these out? thanks

oh yeah, i dont want to cut the carpet.

That sounds ridiculously unsafe and ilegal.

I assume we are talking about the ***** here? They just pull out. And then push back in. They pull straight out. You don't need to twist.

oh yeah, i dont want to cut the carpet.
Then you're pulling the dash.

convenience, i guess. rather have it and not use it, then not have it and need it. besides, the chicks really like it, especially on those long drives.

yeah, you guys were right, i pulled the ***** straight out. Except the middle ****, which for me is a dummy **** because i dont have a rear wiper. Be careful not to break the little nipple, which i did , that keeps it from turning though.

Just curious, what kind of nav system is it? I have done the same with my Pioneer nav and it still knows I'm moving from the GPS signal. All it accomplished was an annoying warning message every time it starts up.
