Gen 1 pre purchase inspection suggestions

I am supposed to pick up my new 1985 Gen 1 non SE this Friday 04-20-12. I have to travel a couple hundred miles to get it. It appears to be and is stated to be in mint condition and has under 60,000 miles on it. I usually take cars in to a mechanic to look them over before purchase because they don't care whether I buy it or not and the emotions are out of the deal (and maybe they will catch something that I will not). I will not have time for anyone else to look at it and I am pretty good at looking for rust and spotting repaints, but would love any input on known mechanical problem areas on the car. Also- I am a little concerned about a 1985 with 60K. Does anything dry up or anything on these rotaries? I read somewhere that the housings can get pitted and such if the anti freeze is not changed regularly. Any way that I can make sure this engine is ok other than a good test drive and visual?

This will get modified - engine, coilovers etc., wheels, front and rear spoilers. I'm looking for your suggestions on how to make the most fun out of the engine in this car within reason. Should I:
1. keep the 12A and just add Weber and Header since such low miles
2. sell the 12A and purchase and build a 13B
3. keep the 12A and purchase and build a 13B
4. Go Turbo- and with what engine, etc. Turbo II swap or?
5. My friends are trying to get me to V8 swap, but I'm not sure about that.

Long term- I would like to make big streetable power. For now, I am thinking carb/header/exhaust while I build the real deal over time. I would love your input on this from those of you who have been around these cars for a long time and know what works without too much failure in higher horspower applications.
Thanks to all who can help!

To each his own way, but a "mint" 1985 with low miles like that ought to be kept as it is - stock. I wouldn't worry too much about the mechanical parts - just do a good check - make sure it starts and runs okay. Everything on these cars can be fixed after all and even if it has a minor problem, big deal, where are you going to find another one like this??
