Gasoline smell in engine bay and inside the car

Hi All,

I have a 99' RX-7 with engine mapped. There's a very noticeable gasoline smell inside the car when I have my fan/ac on. This smell doesn't exist if I have all my windows up and a/c switched to recirculated. I can also smell it in the engine bay, near the oil filter side. So it's likely when I turn on fan/ac, it sucks the gasoline smell into the cabin?

I talked to my mechanic and he said it's common for RX-7 and might be due to aged gaskets . I had a 94' RX-7 from new before (for 6 years) and never had gasoline smell.

The smell really turns me off 🤮...so not looking forward to driving it...

Does any of you have this issue before? Any idea what causes the problem?

Thanks,
Roy

Make sure it’s not fuel dripping… an easy way for an engine fire to start.

im very cautious when I smell coolant or oil through the window or under the hood, but paranoid when I smell fuel.

I'd probably be searching "Fuel Pulsation Damper" which is the #1 reason I keep a fire extinguisher in my FD.

Don't drive it until you get it sorted. To be safe, you may want to replace the two fuel hoses on top of the engine (under the UIM) to include the FPD (or delete it) and the hose that connects the secondary to the primary rails. Those hoses get a lot of heat. Less susceptible to heat, but maybe degraded are the hoses that connect the underbody fuel pipes to the engine fuel pipes (near the oil filter)

It could also be the purge control catch tank under the throttle body (if the '99 has that). If that's cracked (or any of the connected lines) you may get fuel vapors

Hi guys,

Thank you everyone for your advise.
Turned out the fuel pressure regulator was broken. Mechanic found me an used one and the smell was gone.

Good to hear you found and fixed the problem, and did not ignore it.
