Exclamation Strong vapor smell coming from engine bay.

Hey all!

I recently purchased a 94 rx-7 for 11,500. Has 89,000 on the stock engine. Turbos were rebuilt and have 2000 miles on them.

Im posting on the forum today because I've been noticing a strong vapor/gas smell coming from my engine. I cant smell it while driving but when I park it at my house it smells about the same as if you were to put your face near a gas pump while pumping.

I've been noticing that I am running through gas fairly quickly as well. I generally do not go past 4,000 RPMS at gradual accelleration.

On one occasion a little ricer integra pulled up to me and revved his engine, since I jsut got the car the temptation was irresistable. My friend was coincidentally behind me when I took off, later that day he mentioned he saw black smoke come out my exaust.

Any ideas as to what might be wrong w/ the car?

I know there is a pretty good oil leak somwhere in the engine #1 because I can see it at the bottom of the bay, and #2 its wet so its an active leak.

Thanks

My baby!

Strong gas smell and going through a lot of gas does not sound good. You may have a fuel leak somewhere, the most common place for a high mileage fd is the FPD(Fuel Pulsation Damper) which leaks because of age. Get this looked at IMMEDIATELY to avoid engine fire.

Fuel Pulsation Dampener

Does anyone know of a place where I could take my 7 to be inspected. I live in the Houston region. Would my best luck be just taking it to a Mazda dealership?

Thanks

Wondering if this might sound familiar to you guys? I've been having a problem lately and i'm really confused. Well here it goes:
-
-When the car is cold (sitting over night) I will start it and it will pour smoke (oil) and it is bad enough that there is a big cloud.
-The smoke will eentually go away if I get in and drive the car (after approx.30 sec)
-I can shut the car off for a couple of hours and not have a problem when I restart. If it is longer than this the problem reoccurs.
-If i drive the car hard, let it sit and Idle the exhaust smells VERY RICH! It smells like i'm sitting at a gas pump.
-I only get 1/2 boost (1st and 2nd turbo)
-I get full boost occasionally only the FIRST time after I just start it.
-I hear what sounds like a boost leak when the turbos are kicking in.

Does any of this sound familiar in ANY way?

My car exibits similar symptoms as this person did.

More then likely it's the FPD. Either way you have a gas leak and sounds like the ecu keeps dumping more in the engine.

THIS WILL CATCH ON FIRE!!! Do a search and you will see how many FD's have gone up in flames due to this.

I think Marcus Williams has a shop in Houston, www.turbostreetfighter.com

Oil smoke on startup is normal.

Definitely sounds liek the Fuel pulsation dampner. I just replaced mine. I wasn't smelling gas, but see enough posts to get it done before it became a problem. Don't take it to a mazda dealership unless they have a mechanice that has been there since '93 and has worked on rx-7's before.

I have this problem too...The trouble is I don't want to pay for labor twice, since a new motor is on the way...I guess I'll need to carry a fire extinguiserh around in the car just in case!!
