gas in oil

Hey guys, I have a (new to me) 1993 FD rx7 with 107,000 miles. well it has sat for the past three days and now is dripping oil that smells like gas out of what looks like the oil pan area. Ive read up on this and it seems like it is the gasket around the oil pan or the rear main seal...

On top of that I have an oil pressure gauge that drops to zero-8psi when at idle and then back up to 40ish when driving, and higher when driving under hard conditions.

My question is; is the oil pressure gauge and the oil leak related?

The car is a stock 13b, with a aluminum AST and a koyo radiator.

welcome to the board.

the leak is probably not related. you'll want to check the sender and related wiring. maybe verify with another gauge. if all of that checks out, then my guess is you may have lost seal at the front cover-front side housing interface.

from what i've read about the FDs, the oil pan is prone to leakage, so that's probably where you are right now.

The weak signal from the sender is typical . Because it's right under the oil filter pedestal it gets dirty easy. At idle and low rpm the signal is probably too weak to get through the bad connection. It's a single spade connector. Just try cleaning it ...maybe use a little sandpaper for a better connection and see what you get.

As far as the oil leak it is probably the oil pan. They are notorious for leaking. But if you want to eliminate a rear main leak as being the cause just remove the inspection plate on the bell housing and check for oil with your fingers.

Some fuel dilution in the oil is also typical on a rotary to one extent or another. If it's really bad or comes on soon after an oil change then it may be some worn internals on the engine.

alright thanks guys! I took a peek this weekend and it seems to be the oil pan. It's about 2-3 drops every 12 hours or so. That will be replaced asap.

as for the sending unit I'll look into that and see what I can do to clean it up.

When you have time, take a stroll through the FAQ sticky in the 3rd Generation Section. A lot of useful information for the new owner as well as a link to a downloadable version of the Factory Service Manual.
