could be a fuel / tuning issue. I know that mine was backfiring when the car was running on the rich side

Im going to bring it to a local shop once the exhaust gets put on tomorrow... so maybe this weekend so that I can get a compression test and a look over from an rx7 specialist.

idle set too high or throttle cable doesnt release all the way. normally if u give it just a hair of gas while decelerating it does that. if it was adjusted correctly. i have an s5 engine with intakes and an s4 throttle cable. im always ****** with it cuz its too short and its always giving it i tiny bit too much gas with my foot off. also my buddy has a 3 inch catback on his n/a and it does it all the time, and loud as hell. might be back pressure issue

unburned fuel in the exhaust manifold igniting under the heat & exhaust pressure. stock computer runs rich naturally. Talked a long time ago with mech who was 1 of 13 specialist for mazda from 85-95 for rotary with the end of the rx7 in the US.
