SC fuel problems

ok my 83 12a is all stock, except the nikki carb has been welded so the secondarys open manually instead of by vacuum. The problem is if i take off wide open through 1st and 2nd when i get to 3rd it will only turn to around 5000 rpm. In which i have to let off, it acts like it is running out of gas. it has a new factory fuel pump, the carb was just rebuilt ,and the fuel lines cleaned. could the secondaries opening manually cause it to suck that much more gas? please help. thank you.

Could be a clogged fuel filter or a clogged pickup in the tank. I would start by testing the volume you are getting from the pump. Take the fuel feed off the carb and stick it in an empty gallon jug. Turn the key to 'ON' and the pump should run. Time for 1 minute and see what you get. You should be nearly half full after 1 minute. If it is much less, you have a bad pump or a restriction in the line somewhere (typically at the filter or the pickup in the tank). Often, the tank will rust and the rust flakes will collect at the pickup screen/tube.

I forgot to say that I have two filters on it the factory one under the car,and a Fram one in front of the carb dont think that would make a differance but figured it was worth saying. I`m going to try what gsl-se addict said and see what happens, as soon as it stops raining. oh Michael does that mean you wont help now lol.

Ok I ran the fuel line in a gal jug and came up with half an inch. I replaced the factory style filter near the tank and blew air through the lines. Now im getting about 3 inches in the gal jug. And it will turn to redline in third now. Is it common to run two filters or will it restrict to too much? Thinks for the help guys.

The 3" is probably close to what it should be. The 12A pump is supposed to deliver at least 1.1 liters per minute (around 1.2 quarts).

The question now is why the filter/line was clogged. You may have a lot of rust or similar in your tank and that is causing things to clog. You might run a clear filter for awhile and keep an eye on it and see how fast it clogs. It might clear up after a few new filters, or it may stay the same or get worse and you have have to drop the tank to clean it or replace it.

When I first got the car the previous owner had taken the tank out claiming he had back over something and put a hole in it. Now im guessing it must have been rusty instead, im finding out most of what he told me about the car was a lie anyways. I do know that the car had sat for awhile though mostly cause the carpet and door panels is perfect like new and its only got 102000 miles on it. And I really would like to see how it would fair against bill's se

mine had rust in it. i just used the stock replacement filter at the tank. it's white looking plastic with a yellow looking filter inside it. i just kept an eye on it and changed it out when it started looking brown. it's getting longer and longer between changes. i also keep the clear glass one at the carb too. i change it out after every 2 filters at the tank.
