Fuel problem

I have an 85 GSL that hasn't been started in 4 or 5 years. I got it started and it would run great WITH the choke pulled. I decided to replace the fuel filter and now it won't start unless I put fuel in the carb and it will stop when fuel runs out. Would the fuel cut relay cause this? I plan to check the fuel pump as well, but it seems weird that it would run great one day and then die the next. But, I guess it will always happen like that huh? Any ideas or something I may not be thinking of? Thanks!

After sitting for 5 years, the entire fuel system will need to be cleaned and flushed, and the carburetor will need to be rebuilt.

Thanks Aaron. It is getting fuel to carb, but it stops there. I figured the carb had junk in it and was not allowing fuel through. Is it hard to rebuild the carb?

time consuming but not really all that difficult. will take about a full day even for the experienced to do a thorough job.

just lay everything out in the order you disassemble it so prepare a desk or something.

Fuel that sits longer than a year or so does awful things to whatever it's in. Rebuilding is worth the time to get a car that runs!

Rebuilding is a great way to better understand your fuel system and car in general. Buying another car is just the easy way out.

That sounds just like a problem I had with my 83 it also would only run with the choke pull, turns out it had pick up some trash it the primary jets. Good luck hope you get it fixed.

thanks for the comments! The carb rebuild might be a tad over my head. I started thinking about it and took gas hose off the carb and blew it out with air. Believe it or not the car started! It is actually idling some now. I drove it down my small road tonight and it did fair. Very sluggish and had trouble pulling the hill on my road. But, not bad for the first time it's been driven in appx 5 years! Do you think the carb might clean itself out or will a rebuild probably be needed? Gonna try running it more to see if it helps for now. Anybody around here that does carb rebuilds? I AM HAVING FUN!!!!

Not only the easy way out, but the more expensive way also...up front it might seem as if it isn't but it is..

it will do one of two things:

get better
or
get worse

just drive it and see which.

you may also want to install a second filter up by the carburetor to see how dirty the fuel is coming out of the tank. if it's collecting a lot of crap then you should drain the tank and flush it out.
