freight train on start up

I know some smoke on startup can be expected especially in wintertime, but if mines been sitting for more than a day, i get probably 10-20 seconds of good heavy smoke, then it clears. Once it's warmed, nothing. I can drive the car off and on through the day, still nothing. Only when it sits for more than a day do I get the white fluffy clouds. The more days, the heavier, so if it's been one, then it's not too bad. I've seen some post on how to check it, so I guess I'll get started with that... but I was wondering....

What oil weight would you recommend for a '79. Seems maybe a heavier grade might help with the issue?

Thnx.
