Flexalite 3000 cfm fan not switching on.

Hey all,

I just did a tune up and rad flush and also replaced the fuel filter on my 88 turbo 2. I also gave the engine a good cleaning. It is running better now than it ever has, however since i have done that i noticed it running a bit hot. Sitting at half rather than a 1/4 like normal. It was however one of the hotest days of the year so far. Anyways i checked my godspeed rad which is working great still it seems, and i also checke the therm which is opening and all. Then i noticed with the key in the on position the fan motor was making noise but the fan was not spinning at all.Is there something small i could be missing like a relay or fan switch or is my fan toast?

i also just noticed that the sensor that is right ontop of the thermostat housing was just hanging off. didnt think it had anything to do with it but replacing it anyways.

any help would be great, not really to fond of spending another 300 bucks on a fan.

thx tap

You're talking about an aftermarket setup, so you'll need to figure out how it was configured by a previous owner (or did you do it?). E-fans are commonly wired up with a relay and a temperature switch to trigger it. I use the OEM location on the thermostat cover (that you mentioned), but I have an aftermarket sensor. If someone just tapped into the original switch, it will trigger at ~215F. The switch may be aftermarket or from an automatic (195F switch), or it may not even be in that area at all.

If you want to test the fan directly, run some temporary wires to the battery to see if it will spin. You should also check all of the fan wiring for burnt/broken wiring.

yeha i know the relay is mounted right near the orignal battery tray. i just wired a couple jump wires to my fan and it was successful, so my fan is working and that temp sensor/switch has been replaced and i rewired it. The fan is still not switching on when it gets the normal resting spot on the gauge, im giving it a few more minutes to see if i just didnt wait long enough. The wires all seem to be good. Therefore im assuming its the relay. Any other ideas, or are you thinking its the relay also?

thx a bunch

It could be the relay. How is it wired up? A typical setup would be:

Pin 30 : Fused 12V battery
Pin 87 : + wire to fan
Pin 85 : Switched 12V
Pin 86 : ground wire to temp switch

(85/86 could be reversed, as could 30/87)

The fan would be grounded somewhere to the chassis, and the temp switch would either ground through the switch body or with a separate ground wire.

That appears to be the way it is hooked up. I ordered the relay anyways seeing as how it takes two days to ship and was only $13. That way im covered if its the relay. The relay thats in there looks pretty nasty with corrosion.
