Flashers are somewhat disinterested in their job

The turn signals in my '79 SA will often start out flashing when I activate them, but they will either stop flashing after a few flashes or as soon as I step on the brake pedal. Sometimes they resume flashing when I lift my foot from the brake pedal and sometimes not. My old 1981 did this, too, but either I never attempted to fix it, or I didn't succeed. It was too many years ago to remember. Do I need to simply replace the flasher? Do I have to take everything in the car apart and clean it with contact cleaner or simply adopt arm signals? Thanks

Just in case anyone else encounters this problem on this forum, a new flasher relay along with a new bulb corrected this problem, as I suspected it would.
