FD Stock Temp Gauge Modification

I want to know, has anyone tried to do any simple mods to make the FD RX7 stock temperature gauge report 200+°F as being a high temperature?

An easy one would be to add another resistor in parallel with the sensor. This would make the needle read higher at hot temperatures (which is basically the goal), but this would sacrifice some resolution at the low end.

I already have an aftermarket Defi temperature gauge, so please note my goal is not to measure temperature. My goal is to make the stock gauge read like Joe Schmo would expect to read.

If no one has done this then I will work on it. If it's been done, then could someone please direct me to the thread or site that has information on what they did?

Thanks!

Yep. Check the 3rd gen FAQ thread. It has been refered to as linearization.

Thanks gracer7-rx7,

I had gone there before and looked at all the links before posting, but all I saw was the Autometer gauge replacement and several broken links. The only one that had the right information was the "megaupload.com", but I blocked the download when it took over my browser! It forced popups on me claiming I won an iPod or some crap like that, and the only way to get rid of it was ctrl-alt-del.
Pappa don't play that.

Anyway, I found the linearization pdf elsewhere online, and it's basically what I was looking for. I don't see a need to build the calibration box that he did, but the bottom line is...

A. Jumper over Mazda's biasing on the back of the gauge
B. 100ohms in parallel with the sensor
C. 15-25ohms in series from the sensor (variable pot for calibration)
D. Calibrate when hot to your desired level

Sounds great, I'll do it the next time I have my dash apart.
Thanks again,
mma

Well, how 'bout that.

You can give back to the community by posting the link you found or upload the PDF in this thread and I'll update the FAQ thread.

I went back to the 3rd Gen FAQ and it looks like the Mahjik's links are working now.

The "mahjik.homestead.com/files/ho...structions.zip" links.

The first time I tried them I got the same message as RMRanger received, but now they seem to work fine. Oh well, at least it's there.

Just let one of the 3rd Gen forum mods (myself, Mahjik, Gracer included) know of the bad link and hopefully a good link.

With as much info as in there we certainly are not surfing through them to find links that go bad. We need help to keep the links up to date.

Thanks David and gracer7-rx7,

I didn't mean to make a big deal about this. In fact, my question was answered on the very first response. I just didn't expect the megaupload site to force popups on me when I should have them blocked.

Ok, so here's the forum...
RX7Club.com > Generation Specific > 3rd Generation Specific (1993-2002)

and the post... 09-18-10, 04:58 PM from Mahjik

and the link... http://www.megaupload.com/?d=A9F3607Q

Although my Firefox browser is set to block popups, this pop up appeared...

http://www.flickr.com/photos/motormanalpha/5237230226/
I cleared it to see this popup...

http://www.flickr.com/photos/motormanalpha/5236637219/
at this point I killed the browser with task manager.

After gracer7-rx7 told me it was called linearization, I reloaded the megaupload page and it did not give me any popups. Then I downloaded and viewed the file.

As for the "elsewhere online" site that I claimed to have found it, I was unable to verify it in my browser history. I had many similar links that day and I may have looped around and just thought I was somewhere else. So...

Bottom line, the links appear to be functional, I was having a bad browser day, I'll be happy to let you know if I find something that isn't working on the site, and I hope to not talk about links again for a little while.

Thanks for your patience everyone!
