So I've been having a problem with my 1995 FD for a little while now. It suddenly started sputtering and had a couple problems with stalling. I replaced the fuel pump, fuel filter, speed sensor, and spark plugs and those problems went away. Then a day later the car shut down and gave me an exhaust temp warning light. I let it cool down for 30mins and it started up again. The engine wasn't overheating at all.

Then to try and fix the exhaust issue I replaced the cat with a test pipe. The car drove a little better, but when it warmed up it died again. I just idled it cold to test, and as soon as it go to operating temp it shut off.

I'm thinking the injectors could be at fault. I replaced them awhile back to fix a fuel leak, but it was a used set so maybe they were bad.

Then you might check through the FSM for trouble-shooting...ignition and fuel sections. I would suggest changing the O2 sensor but that should have generated a CEL.

 

Ok, so more info now. I looked into the FSM and for engine bucking/lurching and stalling at cruising the culprits could be:

Fuel pump (replaced with OEM last year, replaced with OEM-type from rockauto two weeks ago)
Fuel filter (replaced two weeks ago and last year)
Spark plugs (replaced two weeks ago and last year)
Ignition coils (not replaced, assuming original set with approx 80,000miles on them)
Injectors (replaced with a used set to fix a fuel leak, fixed the fuel leak but maybe the injectors were bad?)
MAP, Oxygen, Knock sensors, ECU, TPS adjustment
Fuel thermosensor (list exact condition, engine stalls at idle after warm up)

My most likely guesses are thermosensor or injectors.

[Edit:] Upon more research, it seems like a bad thermosensor would put it into limp mode.

 

When in doubt, cheap things first. And thanks for posting the update for posterity. Keep us posted.

 

Ok, well going to bite the bullet on ignition coils (1 of each?) and maybe an igniter module as well.

 

Won't let me edit, so buying 2 trailing, 1 leading ignition coil, and looking on ebay for ignition modules (not sure if these fail very often).

 

i had a similar issue and it had to do with the CAS plug wire, one of them was loose.

Next time it doesnt start, see if you tach moves any when trying to start. if it doesnt it means you are not getting spark.

I got a new CAS harness made and it fixed my issue.

 

Hmm.. ok. I'll ask them to check that. Just bought new ignition coils.

 

If you're talking about the igniter, it doesn't. IIRC, it is self-grounding though...through the mounting bolts. Easy enough to clean.

 

Got it. Well, bought 3 of them anyway for $150. I've got 3 weeks left until I move so I need it fixed ASAP, whatever the problem is.
