FD maintenance questions for my '00 FD

Hi there,

just bought my first FD and want to make sure I don't mess things up from the start
So it's a year 2000 JSpec FD3S and I basically got three questions to start of:

1) I'll be driving this car only in dry conditions, mainly spring/summer/autumn and if any on warm, dry winter days. Usually it doesn't get very cold over here anyways, since I'm living in a rather warm part of Germany.
What oil would you recommend for this conditions?

2) I want to swap oil as fast as possible as I think I've learned so far that the oil system is a very vital and crucial part of our vehicle.
While reading up on oil changes I've recognized that there are other aftermarket oil filter, who offer an integrated magnet for metal scrap filtering, like the HKS unit.
I'm not tight on the budget when it comes to safety on my car, so would such an oil filter offer any real advantages over the OEM filter?

3) The air filter needs an exchange most likely as well. Unfortunately we have really strict laws regarding tuning, you need German certificates for most parts which the fewest tuning companies can offer (understandable).
So I was checking out panel filters, these are OK with our laws.
Would I get any benefits, if only sound from better turbo noises, by swapping the stock panel filter for an aftermarket one?

Know that with a rotary you will never be able to fully drain the oil. Some will always be stranded in the rotors and oil cooler(s). So don't be alarmed if your oil appears dark right after a change. And as just discussed in another thread in this section...intervals should be a little closer than you might be used to with piston engines.

Mazda oil filters or good aftermarket filters (I like Purolator) in OEM size are fine. Oversized filters offer no real advantage IMO and are just harder to get on or off. If you want a Magnet put it on the pan/sump. But afaik, most engine wear is on the jounal bearings and I don't think that metal is magnetic.

A cleanable air filter like K&N might save you some money in the long term but not much performance benefit. If you must keep the stock intake box, search in the 3rd Gen section with the term "cheap bastard" in titles. It involves a modification to the stock intake box that's invisable unless the box is removed completely. Very few oil related issues with your engine. But whatever you can do to improve COOLING is worth the time.

You just confirmed what I read on here about the importance of improving cooling, so I'll dive into that as well
