If you are just starting out, then buying any non-running car in the hopes that it is a minor problem mistaken for a serious one is a bad idea.

See this link for engine rebuild pricing for various levels of worn and broken parts. How lucky do you feel? Is it worth it to take a chance on a $7K engine rebuild, plus thousands of dollars for other potential problems that could be wrong with the car? How do you know the transmission and clutch work if it doesn't run? Do you think you can accurately assess the condition of the driveshaft, halfshafts, and differential if the car doesn't run? How about the shocks, springs, mounts, and bushings?
86-92 Non-turbo Engines

I spent $1,000 on my last RX-7, and it has been running for 4 years now. Don't you think it would be better to pay a few hundred dollars more for a running car that you can take to a mechanic for an inspection?
