FB fuel gauge wiring problem
FB fuel gauge wiring problem
Greetings people,
'84 RX& GSL-SE. One of three wires has come loose from the connector on the gas tank as can be seen in the photos below.
Problem is that I cannot see or figure out where this wire connects. Should be obvious but it's not (to me at any rate).
Can someone please tell me where this wire connects. Until then I'm without a gas gauge which sucks big time.

Thanks guys

ok, I dealt with this problem recently but on my SA22C. should be relative though. the fuel sender only has two wires. the ground wire is the black and the feed wire is yellow. no idea why your connector has a third port or why there is a third wire. check your FSM to be sure though
I hear you.
Just to add to the mystery, the third wire has no actual copper wires sticking out the end. No matter how it got pulled out, unless it was cut with a wire cutter, you'd expect some copper strands to stick out the end.
On the other hand I can't image that this wire was not connected somewhere in some way.
Maybe it is a ground. Even so where does it connect. I'm guessing my gauge isn't working because of this disconnected wire but maybe the two problems are not connected (no pun intended).

Pardon my ignorance but what does 'connect the connector terminal to the body ground' mean in plain English? Where is this 'body ground'? What does it look like?
What do I connect to the so-called body ground? Just the YL wire or the whole connector?

It means put a jumper wire into the Connector where the Y/L wire is and then run the wire to the body of the car.
GROUND is the metal of the car, frame, engine etc.
They most likely don't recommend the gas tank as a ground, just in case it is insulated from the rest of the car,by rubber. If so it would not conduct.

OK so I followed the manuals instructions. I disconnected the connector. I connected the YL (ground) wire to the chassis/body.. Gas warning light does not illuminate. Manual says it's either a fuse or wiring harness problem. Raining right now, not best time to check wiring harness. Fuses all 'seem' to be good BUT fact is I don't know which fuse could be the problem. When I turn the key in the ignition all cluster warning lights light up including the gas warning light. So I know the warning light works but maybe the gas sensor is on another circuit.

The copper wire is inside the plastic sleave of the wire. You will just need to strip some of the jacket away using wire strippers.
When you grounded it to the body, did you ground it to unpainted metal? Did you ground the copper wire inside to the body?
My wire had come loose like yours. The 3rd terminal in the connector had become quite gummed up with corrosion. As you can see from your diagram and from the one I have, there are suppose to be three wires in that connector. I would suggest you youtube videos on crimping wire terminals correctly and then clean out and replace your third wire back in the connector where it belongs. All else fails, I'm sure a local shop can hook it back up for next to nothing. I wouldn't worry about testing it until you've rehooked it up.
Wow, Thanks for taking the time to explain this is such detail.
I think you're right i.e. that it's pointless testing until I make sure everything is just right. Otherwise I'm likely to get bad test results because things weren't set up right which is what I hope is happening.
My YL terminal is also all gummed up and filled with c**p.
Chances are that where I grounded the wire was a painted area (couldn't see very well as it was inside the wheel well).
One thing puzzles me. If you look at the photos it's not obvious where the YL ground wire connects to on the fuel sensor. I can't see any corresponding male terminal.
