FB 20 amp engine fuse

I recently bought an 85 with a 12a. I believe it's a GS, it has drums and cloth seats. I bought it as a "sort of runs" car. When I bought it, you had to spray starter fluid into the carb to get it to run, and even then it would only run a few seconds. Once I got it home, I rebuilt the carb, changed the fuel filter, left the battery on a tender, and filled the tank. Car still doesn't start. I pulled the fuel line off the carb and it was completely dry. At this point, I have my wife turn the key while I listen to the pump, and there is no sound out of it. I pull the rear bin and get to the plug, and find this.

I quickly repair the wire by stripping it and using a wire nut as a temp fix. Try it again and nothing. Now I check the fuses. See that my 20 amp "engine" fuse is blown. Throw a new one in and as soon as the key is turned to "on" I hear it pop. Unplug the fuel pump and try a new fuse, pops Again. Unfix my fix, new fuse, pops again. So obviously there is a short in my front harness. At this point, I have no fuse in then"engine" position. Here is the weird part. Just out of curiosity, I pour fuel in the carb, crank it, and it springs to life until the fuel burns up. So i am getting spark. I thought the engine fuse affected spark. Also, I am getting all gauges to work, and all other functions like lights and horn and voltmeter. Any ideas? What if I run new wires to the fuel pump. Where can I tap off of? Am I risking anything by not having that 20 amp fuse in the fuse box?

I have that exact problem, I was driving down the highway when it died. Got it back home, replaced the fuse and it started and ran just fine for a solid ten minutes, so I went for a test drive and it sputtered then quit again, sure enough blown fuse. Tried one more to see if I could get it back home and "pop!" as soon as I cranked it.

Did you ever find the fault other then that wire at the connector?
