Exhaust system?
Hi everyone,
I know I'm a noob, but I don't understand all of this exhaust system modification terminology. I know what a catalytic converter is and I know what muffler is, but there are many things that don't have any meaning to me. could someone please explain?
Some things I would like to know about (how they differ from stock, how they benefit performance, etc.):
hi flow cats
headers
downpipe
cat back=everything after catalytic converter, right?
Basically, if I want the most hp increase for the least amount of money what should I do? If there is anything that I should know about that is not on the list, please tell me.
Thanks a bunch

Year/model? In FC terms...
High flow cat: A less restrictive catalytic converter.
Header: Replaces the stock exhaust manifold on an NA engine.
Downpipe: Replaces the precats on an NA engine & connects the stock exhaust manifold to the main cat.
OR
Replaces the precat on a turbo engine & connects the turbo to the main cat.
And yes, a catback is everything to the rear of the main cat.

Thanks, we're lookin' at an 89 fc n/a model.
Precat? is that the exhaust manifold or what ( I'm just thinkin' pre=before, and the exhaust manifold is before the catalytic converter)
sorry for all of the rookie questions.

Precats are small catalytic converters that are closer to the engine than the main cat. Because they're closer they warm up faster, and reduce emissions on cold starts. NAs have 2 small precats between the exhaust manifold and the main cat. Turbos just have one.
If you're looking to get the most out of the exhaust system, a header + a presilencer/resonator or high flow cat + a good catback system is the way to go. Check out the Racingbeat and Corksport websites.

You dont have to appologise for being a noob. We were all noobs at one point. This section is for those types of questions so ask away. Also if you want faster answers you can always use the search option. I find that if I go to advanced search and click on titles only that I get a lot of really good info quickly. Hope this helps. Welcome to the 7.
