On a piston engine it is when timing and exhaust is perfectly in sync and the pressure difference applies suction to the intake port allowing a na motor to run slightly above atmospheric pressure

That is called "scavenging", and you are referencing an engine tuning technique called "overlap". This video explains valve overlap on a piston engine.

One of the best things about this forum is that I can learn the new terms that the internet generation makes up for things that have been around for decades. This keeps me younger than my coworkers, at least in my mind anyway.

 

Actually learned it reading david vizards budget built v8 book was just wondering if it transferred over to rotaries, and thanks for the info cleared that up for me. Side note some of us youngsters actually read books still

 

It's also discussed in Werner's book "Street Rotary", and (IIRC), yes it's possible in a rotary.

 

Hmm, the David Vizard articles that I have read used the standard "scavenging" term, although he likes to make an argument that it is effectively a fifth cycle. He must have made up that term for his fifth-cycle theory. I guess I am going to need to read some more of his works so I can catch up on things. See, like I said, this website is great for learning all of the new made-up terms. (All terms were originally made-up at some point in time).
