Exhaust glowing + Other question

Title says it... 1989 fc t2. Other than running lean what will cause this? If I let the car sit it wont heat up, but after semi-hard driving it gets extemely hot. Bought the car unaware of this and a few days after buying it the turbo started screaming and the car lost all power once into boost.

I am replacing the turbo but I need to find the root of this overheating issue, I cant have this happening again. The previous owner also had a shop weld an elbow replacing the stock one into the exhaust that doesnt have a bung for the oxygen sensor, to my knowledge the car doesnt even have one right now.

My other question revolves around me being worried to only replace the turbocharger and fix the exhaust sensor. The car does smoke on cold startup, its not a ton of smoke but its enough to make me wonder if I have a water seal out or not. I do not want to replace the turbocharger with the stage 1 bnr Im getting and have the bearings go out right away because there is coolant in my oil.

I will rebuild eventually, I just dont have the time right now nor 1000-3000$ kicking around if I have any bad internals.

Thanks,
~SDET
