Engine stalls out 84 GSL-SE

Thought I would toss this out here to see if anyone has had a similar experience or provide some insight as to what the problem may be.

Short version- car starts perfectly fine, wll traveled varying distances from 1 to 15 miles then car stalls out. I can not restart it until some time goes by, it seems to be about a minimum of 30 minutes, but then it starts up like a champ again.

It seems like it is losing fuel. Once it dies, engine cranks over but will not even attempt to ignite. When I do this I can not smell any gas. My hunch is that it is fuel pump related. A shop I use locally thinks it is in the ignition systems and wants to start out by replacing about $1000 worth of ignition parts. I am not ready to jump into that until I feel that is the likely cause.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Keep the car away from that shop that wants to test parts out..that's all they'd be doing anyways..Seriously.
I can think of better things I can do with 1000 bucks than give it to Idiots who Don't have a clue what they are doing.
Have you looked at the pump in the tank yet?..fuel filter?..fuel pressure check?
The car is EFI,correct?..

SE has an external pump.

start with the fuel system. be thorough. as long as you plan to keep the car, money spent here is an investment.

start with filter.

you may also consider cleaning the tank first, but regardless of how many times I do it, I still consider dropping a tank a loathsome experience.

I would say test the pump, and you can do so ... as long as you realize it can pass the tests described in the FSM and still end up being "bad".

clean the lines and test your injectors.

there is significantly less gray area with ignition systems, so I would agree that you should avoid the shop that is trying to get you to spend $1000 for ... i'm not even really sure what.
