Engine Stalling Issue

Hey y'all,

I just acquired a 1992 fd off of someone earlier this week, so I am new to rotaries in case my question seems dumb. A little bit of background, the car has a rebuilt engine built by a shop over in Maryland. Currently it makes about 430 to the wheel with a streetport, as well as a single turbo upgrade plus methanol injection and other some other goodies. It's got an Adaptronics ecu (not quite sure about the details on that) which I have not messed around with yet.

In any case, my problem at the moment is the car has stalled by itself on idle a couple times. I've noticed that it will tend to do that if I go for a pull above 4000 rpm and then throw it in neutral (or just generally come to a complete stop afterwards). From what I understand rotaries require a slightly different driving style than piston engines, so I am not sure if it's user error or something actually wrong with the car.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

welcome to the board.

you are asking in the right place. as a new member, this is the section of the forum where you can ask just about anything you want without fear of other members clowning you about the question. you're good.

congratulations on the car. would love to see photos of it when you get a chance.

as far as your issue goes, i would probably start with finding out which flywheel you have in the car. i know it can (supposedly) happen with very light flywheels. do you still have any contact with the previous owner or at least have a complete list of all that was done to the car?

the next thing i thought about was perhaps the tune wasn't finished. i know you mentioned 430 hp, so some tuning was done, but maybe they had not completed the street tuning.

so those are my main ideas for now. i'm not an FD guy and i've certainly never owned a 430 hp-anything, so get your grain of salt. however, there are some very smart, and experienced, guys around here and i'm sure someone will be able to get you straight.

good luck with it.

Can you raise the idle speed in the ECM? Hopefully this would cause the idle air control valve and it's control system to react sooner, preventing a stall. I'm thinking of this as a light weight flywheel issue. The RPM's drop faster than with a heavier OE flywheel equipped. The IAC may not be able to respond in time when the RPM's are dropping like a rock. If you adjust the idle speed from 750 to 1200, it will have to open sooner. Please correct me if my thinking is wrong on this.
