Engine removal

I am in the process of removing a 12a motor. I was hoping to remove just the motor and leave the tranny. However the engine seems to be stuck to the tranny. How many bolts are on the bell housing? Two in the passengers two on the drivers, one of which going through the starter. I don't have a lift so I could have missed something, is this the case? I really don't want to deal with the clutch so I really do not want to remove the tranny.

You have to remove the slave cylinder to get the engine out anyways.
Is there a bolt Inside the hole where the starter is that holds the engine/trans together there?
I know there is a "hidden bolt" like that on FC's.

I know there is a "hidden bolt" like that on FC's.
1. he shouldn't have to touch it if he's leaving the tranny in the car.

2. yeah, that phantom bolt is there on the SAs/FBs, too.

also, two things: (1) if your 12A has the beehive, then there's a tranny bolt under it that is not "easily" seen and (2) as mentioned earlier, the clutch will be coming out with the engine, it doesn't physically connect with the tranny.

I removed the starter yesterday and found the bolt that was under it, is there another one? I think the one I was missing was at the top of the motor. That's 5 bolts total, correct? Also, I didn't drive the car but was told the tranny functions. I was able to shift through the gears but when I was under the car today I noticed a large hole right behind the oil pan, in the center of the tranny. What is this? It looks as if there was some sort of plug but I was able to feel gears inside. There are no threads but that can't be right, it needs to be plugged, doesn't it? I haven't removed the tranny ye but don't see how there could be any fluid in it.

Say what ? Center of tranny is a couple feet behind oil pan. I think there may be a rubber plug on the bottom of bell housing though . you probably feel the pressure plate. I could be wrong.

About 4" behind the engine. I will take a pic tomorrow. It's about the size of a silver dollar.

It is the rubber plug. Not sure why it was removed but I need a new one. Anyone purchased one?

^ welcome.

"hard" is a relative term, so it totally depends on what tools/equipment you have at your disposal and how mechanically inclined you are.

that said, I don't think it's hard at all. if you have a little common sense, a reference (FSM or other) and you know how to use a ratchet and a wrench, then it's doable. it may just take time.

I would be willing to bet that the first time I did it, it took me a few hours (at the cost of going back and forth for tools and literally spilling blood), but now I can usually do a Gen I in less than an hour.

Sometimes they may be slightly stuck together as well, so a rubber mallet can come in handy.
