Engine Flooding

So I've been looking at this turbo 87 Rx7 and its pretty minty with less than 100k on the odometer. The only issue that it has is the motor floods constantly. The seller says its been in storage for a good bit of its life and isn't certain if he cleaned out the gas tank after taking it out. He is able to start it and keep the car running using starter fluid but says it'll flood and die out if he starts it with the fuel pump after de-flooding it.

He thinks one injector is sticking open, I've heard the switch in the fuel pump idea but personally, I think the fuel return line may be clogged. What do you guys think and what are some tests I should do to make sure the rotors and seals are in good shape?

One is sticking possibly or one is just leaking, or it just has low compression. It is always hard to say, but it is had to believe the return line it clogged.

I would get the compression then do a bleed down on the fuel pressure to check for a leak. It should loose pressure at somewhere in the 1psi over 2-3 mins at the most, 1psi over 10min would be much better

How would I do a bleed down on the fuel pressure?

I do plan on doing a compression test, my biggest worry is if it needs a rebuild.

Well if you do a compression check it'll yield one of two results. 1) compression is good and you can rule that out and start troubleshooting the fuel system or 2) If it does need a rebuild you can use that as a bargaining chip, work the price down and use the money you saved on rebuilding it. Either situation isn't too shabby.

While it would be a good way to haggle the price, I'm not wanting a car I'm going to have to rebuild right from the start. Hopefully the compression test goes pretty good, the flooding issue should still be enough to haggle the price.

almost every rx7 ive worked on that has set for awhile, the injectors leak by. i have had a few once they have been ran a bit and the junk gets out of them they run fine from there on out. also the idle mixture can be screwed up, which is easy to adjust with a couple test lights. just a few ideas for you. also if you end up needing a motor, i have 1 and here soon maybe 2 N/A motors. im not very far from you either. i will be making a drive through utah maybe next weekend so i can drop one off if you are near northern utah. i know its got a turbo, but if you are wanting another rotary for it, its an option.

Well, I haven't purchased the car yet, I haven't even gone to see it. If it does have bad compression, I won't be buying it.

I don't know if it would help, but if you take out the second fuse and turn the ignition for around 5 seconds, it'll flush out all the unnecessary oil from the engine. So, if that's the case, it shouldn't be too much problem.
