Emissions Removal SA

I have an 85 RX7 with a 12a. I am planning on installing a RB header this summer and removing emissions equipment. I was talking to an old Mazda mechanic the other day, and he said there is a risk of breaking the e-shaft if the AC compressor belt is too tight. Would that risk be greater if the air pump is removed? The air pump is on the opposite side and provides opposite force to the AC compressor. Is this a real risk?
