Hi there,

I'm new here, I have been having problems with my '91 626 and from googling and other boards everyone seems to reference this site so I figured it was where to come for knowledge on mazdas

Anyway, my transmission has been playing up so I've decided to check the transmission fluid but being completely illiterate with cars I found a dipstick with temperature written on it and a curly bend up near the end of it.

Apparently some cars use temperatures to check transmission fluid but if anyone can advise me on how I should check and what level to look for that'd be GREAT.

I know I'm supposed to put the car on level ground and get it to running temperature but how long would it take to get to running temp and when it is at it what level of fluid/temperature should I look for on the dipstick.

Ok I looked in the owner's manual and found what I needed.

The fluid levels are fine so the gear slipping and lurching when changing gears must mean there are a deeper problems. My speedo is not working and the hold light is flashing. The manual says the hold light flashes when there is a problem with electrics in the transmission which makes sense as the speedo to transmission connection must be ruined, explaining both symptoms.

From my descriptions does it sound safe to drive this care 300km to my mechanic? I have a GPS to tell me speed so that's not a problem
