Differential locks when brakes pressed.

I'm driving an 88 Rx7 Convertible. Was taking a corner, and I heard a loud snap from the rear end, now everytime I press the brakes or pull the E-Brake I start hearing a really loud Grinding like sound. When I am about to come to a complete stop, the differential locks completely and tires hop over the ground. Then I have to put the car in reverse before the diff unlocks and lets me drive forward. It shifts smoothly, and after diff unlocks there is no sound coming from the rear end. It only happens when the brakes are pressed and doesn't stop until the car has come to a halt. Wtf could this be??

Oh believe me, it's parked. And it's not moving until it's fixed.

I would start by pulling the wheels and checking for a broken or cracked rotor, wheel bearing etc

And by the way check your brake pads. Could have broke one and now grinding it into the rotor.

I'll do that, but why would that lock the differential up when coming to a stop?

Im thinking its simple to look at incase if its not the diff thats locking up and maybe something else making you think its the diff thats locking up. Ive seen brakes lock up completly before till you put it in reverse and then they unlock like nothing ever happened.

If one wheel locks with a limited slip diff, the whole rear axle will lock. If it's happening when you're braking, just check your pads, clamps, and rotors. Don't worry about the diff unless those all check out clean.

Check the yolks on the rear of the drive shaft... Or the bolts that connect the end of the drive shaft to the diff maybe

Been awhile since i've been on here. But that problem was solved long ago. Thank you coltdaddy and weak-sauce for reminding me that sometimes the little things can be the biggest problems. Lol. What happened was, that the lower bolt on the brake caliper had snapped, and every time I would press the brakes it would send the caliper flying upward.

Yep..always helps to have your Brakes attached..
I knew they put them there for some reason!
(it's a wonder someone doesn't come up with deleting them to save weight!!!!)
