That's kind of a broad question.

Why do you want to modify the engine? For more power? What are you goals? What is your use of the car? How much money do you have?

Have you looked through the 2nd gen FAQ sticky at the top of this forum?

I recommend doing everything all at once; forever.

I reccomend not modding it. If you wanna go fast sell it and buy a t2 will save you alot of money and effort for little to no results

How about before considering any performance mods, you make sure your basic car is sound and ready for them. Change ALL fluids, engine oil, transmission, diff, brake fluid and coolant. Stock radiator? Consider upgrading it. New plugs, maybe plug wires. Clean and flow test injectors. Check grounds and all hoses, maybe change t-stat.
Not alot of 'WOW' factor in those, but they can make all the difference when you start adding power. And by the time you get through you'll know alot more about the car.

if your looking to do alot to the car, do as much at once as possible. it makes everything way easier. when you do it piece by piece, things tend to get messed up (how i ruined my Audi :p)

wow... a mod just chewed out a guy 2 posts above you for saying the same thing

What sarge said was right. First off make sure your 20 year old car is properly maintained. Even if all seems well, there could be something waiting to go bad that would cause you even bigger problems.

Since modding for power is often very involved, expensive, and possibly dangerous, I would suggest improving the handling. Lightweight rims, sticky rubber, new bushings adjustable suspension, are all things that will be benificial to you no matter the power you are putting down. Good luck.

oviously a cold air intake would help if it pulls more ambient air, and headers and a new exhaust would also help much. new plug wires help alot, and if your feeling froggy do a s5 mani swap if you have a s4 and you may gain 10-12 bhp. make sure your actuators work since if not you may lose lots of power.

Do what everyone is telling you to do and get the car up to par then once it is running really well the first mods that should be done on an N/A if you are not looking to tear the engine apart is exhaust then air intake and of course suspension. Racing beat makes great exhaust parts for the N/A engine. I happen to like Tein suspension though I have never had them on my car. Search the forum

all above are dead on. induction, possible intake swap( s5 or FD ), header and exhaust, plugs wires, check and possibly replace injectors ( a great injector mode are from the 85 13b SA, has largest factory injectors for the older years), if keeping the s4 intake just use block off plate and get ride of the actuators, suspension, wheels, tires, radiator, electric fan, and i think is one of the most important, replace the pulsation dampener on the primary fuel rail with a banjo bolt because when the dampener fails it can leak fuel strait down to the exhaust manafold or header witch ever you have.

Installing an FD intake would result in less power and it is far from a bolt on.

plugs wires
That's just maintenance.

That would result in quite a drastic loss in power due to a rich condition.

replace the pulsation dampener on the primary fuel rail with a banjo bolt because when the dampener fails it can leak fuel strait down to the exhaust manafold or header witch ever you have.
Just replace the damper with a new one instead of hacking up the car with banjo bolts.
