Clutch Slave Cylinder - Simple Tech Question

I'm looking for some advice on installing a clutch slave cylinder on the trans as I have never done this before.

I've bolted the slave cylinder onto the trans but am not sure how to connect the rod and boot onto the fork. Does it snap in? Do you have to connect something from the other side? Or does it just sit in the pocket on the fork? Thanks

On the 1stgens, the SA and FB's, you have to get the ball into the fork socket, both previously greased, before you put any bolt in. You have to then apply quite a bit of pressure to get the bolt holes on the slave cylinder to line up with the threaded holes in the transmission case, making sure the rod doesn't pop out of the fork socket. If you can just get one bolt in and screw it in a little bit, everything gets a lot easier.

But there's no way to do it if you bolt the slave in first. You certainly wouldn't want that to be able to pop out after it was installed, tight?

Push the rod(with boot on it) into the slave just far enough that the Rod's ball will go onto the Fork.Put the slave into position andTighten the two 12mm bolts. The rod should now be snug enough so that you can put your hydraulics on and then bleed the clutch system.
By the way.Post your Car SERIES,,we are not psychic...89 s5..LoL.

thanks for the tips. I'll try greasing them. hopefully that will get the ball to snap into the fork.

wish I could have uploaded the pictures I took but kept getting an error. I'll try this again if I have to.

I have an 89 turbo but I think it is the same as the 1st gen.

ok I tried greasing it but it still didn't work. this is a pic of what I'm trying to do. am I missing something here or do I just need to apply a lot of pressure to get it to pop in. I've tried using a pry bar on the fork with it bolted in and tried pushing the slave into the fork before bolting it into the trans

It's the cart before the horse...you've already got the slave cylinder bolted down...it will never go in. The slave cylinder must be completely UNBOLTED from the transmission case first, then you put the rod's end into the socket of the fork sticking out of the transmission. The slave cylinder is not attached to the transmission in any way at this point. Once you know the rod end is in the fork socket, then you begin the fun part of pushing the slave cylinder towards the fork to compress the rod into the slave cylinder so you can line up the slave cylinder bolt holes to the threaded bolt holes in the transmission. Only then do you bolt the slave cylinder to the transmission as seen in the pics.

Personally, I take the rebuilt or new slave cylinder, paint it, wait three days for the paint to be thoroughly dry, attach the hose at that point and then install it onto the transmission. Then I bolt it the hose up to the firewall connection, fill up the reservoir, put on the pressure bleeder cap, open the bleed screw, attach a bit of clear hose and then knock all the air out.

Eastwood makes a great kit for this.
