Alright,

After a week of owning my s5 after trading my cressy for it, the clutch starts to slip.. BOOOO!! so I just ordered an Exedy oem flywheel, a competition clutch light weight flywheel (around 10lbs I believe) and a s5 counter weight. Hopefully all will be here by next weekend so I can get in there and not have to worry about babying the car around as not to toast the clutch any more than it already is!

I have done quite a bit of research on replacing clutch and flywheel for the rx7, and I have done several other clutch jobs: civic, delsol, jetta, 240sx, and cressida haha! Every freaking car I have owned I have had to replace the clutch.. so dumb. Anyways, I am not a newb to replacing clutches, but obviously have never worked on a rotary before. I know that there is a 52mm? or 54mm? nut, or 2-1/8in? something huge that is holding the fly wheel on. So my question is other than that nut, I will just bolt the counter weight to the aftermarket fly wheel, bolt that on, and proceed to replace the clutch as normal? (using alignment kit and such) I just don't want to get under the car, pull the tranny and then run into something unexpected is all! I have done research and as far as I have seen, nothing too out of the ordinary, but just want to double check is all.

BTW: I have an 89 GTU 5 spd, everything is bone stock as far as engine and drive train goes (to my knowledge at least).

For those that may be looking at doing something similar here are the parts and part numbers for what I ordered:
OEM Exedy Clutch: PN:100038 for N/A
" ": PN: 100037 for Turbo

Competition clutch Lightweight flywheel: PN: 2-604-STU for N/A IDK about for turbo but i found the info on their website. CC Website

and I got a rear counter weight from an s5 auto that should bolt right up to the flywheel (at least from my understanding).

Hopefully this is helpful. I found all this on ebay, around 500$ total for everything shipped. Not too bad considering I just sold some extra parts I got in the trade for around 650$ HA!

Please correct me if I am wrong on anything. This is my first rx7, and I am still learning but this is info I have gathered and thought putting it into a beginners thread might help other beginners.

Ok..the nut is 54mm ..or 2-1/8th inches.
The flywheel is held on to the eccentric shaft by that nut...AND the Flywheel keeps it's Place ON the shaft with a Small KEY-WAY(goes in a slot in the shaft,so the flywheel stays in place and won't spin on the shaft.) I stress this part in Caps as it IS Important!!!..and it is so small!
You get the Old Flywheel off,put the Counterweight and KEY-WAY on and use the 54mm nut and torque it down to spec.
the Light Flywheel goes on with SIX bolts to the Counterweight...any old way,it is not weighted.
Then Slap on the disc,PP and bolt it while centering the disc with the alignment tool.
that pretty well takes you up to LIFT and replace!

There ya GO..Cup o Noodles!..I mean Fresh!..sorry..!(chuckle..had to!)

Thanks for the clarification on the nut size. and know exactly what key-way you are talking about form the pictures in my research. That sounds pretty cut and dry to me, other than the counterweight and it being a rotary, sounds like a pretty standard clutch job. Know lets just hope all my parts get here by Saturday!

One last question, is there only 1 way for the counter weight to go on? or at least, is it obvious which way it should go on?

pretty well only one way that the counterweight goes on.The flywheel needs to attach to it,so the face needs to be out enough to get the clutch on..lol.
You will see it clearly when you get the parts.

Borrow a " blind hole puller kit" from auto zone for the pilot bearing. Its free to borrow if you take it back. Please trust me on this.

Do they ask for a deposit though? and what does that do? I have never used on of those before in any clutch job.

i have to do a clutch on the rx7 i just picked up i never done one on a rotary before hopefully its not too different
