Arrow cermet coated engine for a 1991 RX7 convertible

Hey Roto Guys, As a new club member and original owner of 1991 RX7 convertible, which i have loved, I find myself with what I am told is a situation in which i must replace the rotary engine. I am hearing that I should consider finding a cermet coated engine. I have a 13B non-turbo S5 engine block. What are the thoughts on this as i want to keep this car as my daily driver and presently she is down for the count. I do not want to just put in another rebuilt engine that Mazada can supply with a 12/ 12 guarentee. The idea that the engine is just to speck and can literally have well over 100,000 miles
but just meets spec... is not my idea of a good deal at 3100 -3500. I understand that a cermet coated engine will last the entire life of my car or me which ever comes first. Okay boys I need to know about this ASAP . I need to know about this or where I can find one, the ins and outs. Can you help

Arrow cermet coated engines

i am looking for some information on cermet coated engines. I am told that these have been traditionally used by Mazada on their race cars but not on their street cars. I believe that there is only one company providing these and the cost is 8000
I think. I would like some input on this process and what you guys think about this as I would like to do this right and not have to look at replacing another engine for the life of me so to speak

Search... But you probably won't get the picture

If you search, you'll find some threads with experiences/opinions related to cermet.
The low-down is that on paper coating all housings and using ceramic apex seals, you get a "wear-free" engine (in a matter of speaking, obviously).

What you'll find is that there are several negative experiences related to the quality and the specs precision of the parts you'll get back, together with some experiences of people who had insane problems with the coating coming off.

But most of this is old stuff and I'd imagine a lot of these issues are resolved at JHB.
Also, the problems with some parts are related to the fact that when you send your housings, you won't get those back, unless you specifically ask for them. And some people complained about the actual conditions of those housings that they got back.
IIRC, the bad coatings were coming from a story where somebody found them to be out of speck and then tried to machine them themselves, only to find out after the engine had been running, that they were a mess. So from the story you can't really tell if this was a problem with what the customer did, or with the actual quality of the material.

To finish, they have 3 types of coatings, with very different pricing. I am getting the feeling (based on what I have been able to read), that going with the best or second best should grant complete satisfaction. But these are only my impressions based on limited information.
I hope this helps.

Thank you so much for this link and i will carefully take a closer look. I will be needing the engine as my own is down and out and not resuseable. I will contact JNB and see what they have to say in regard to my own core
many thanks

Many thanks for this information. I will continue to look at any threads that may add some inlightenment in this subject. I would have loved to have found someone who has an engine they can't use and or finds themselves in a situation to sell one..perhaps someone will contact me...elsewise I will contact JNB and see about an out right purchase without core .
cheers
