Carter Fuel Pump Noise

Looking for some help. Recently installed a Carter high output fuel pump to a 1st Gen. When key is turned to the on position, fuel pump makes a loud whining noise, and continues to make that noise when car is started and driven. Creates a real annoying buzz in the car.

Any suggestions on how to fix?

welcome to the board.

assuming the noise you speak of is the "normal" noise the pump makes when running, it should simply be a matter of installing some sort of insulation. where did you install the pump? if you put some rubber between the pump and whatever part of the frame you have it bolted to, it should alleviate most of the noise. i don't think you'll get rid of ALL noise, but you can get it to reasonable levels.

Take a look in the 1st gen archive. There is a writeup on installation of the Carter fuel pump, with some pretty good discussion on noise control.

Ah, screw it. Easier for me to find the thread for you than to tell you how. Here you go:

Hope this helps

nice link, just remember to rewire the new pump, stock wiring will not support the new power demands of the pump for long.
mine was done by the p/o with a seperate feed wire coming from the fuse block powered by key on power. yes you can hear it running, if you want true power and fuel supply you will start to tune it out......also stereo help a lot..lol

I was in local parts store the other day and was looking for some insulators for mounting my Accel 300+ ignition and notice some pretty nice looking ones in the Help section. They were for a windshield wiper motor, I trimmed the metal spacer that runs through it so that didn't transfer the vibrations and they are way thicker than the ones the ignition came with.

I also remember reading on this site that rewiring the pump helped some of the guys lower the noise that their pumps made. Good luck
