Carb ?s..85 Rx7 bogging out right off idle, then ok

New to us RX7.... a 1985 with 220,000 miles, stock form, 1.1 na motor....

It will start up ok with the choke and of course the idle is high with the choke. After the choke turns itself off, it idles lower. The idle when warmed up sounds good, no misses or anything.....however...

When you apply the gas pedal slightly, it woofs out. You can kill the motor in neutral just by SLIGHTLY pressing the pedal. If you pulse the pedal you can get it past that zone, or if you just give it alot of pedal at once, it will bog once and then rev nice.

So pulling off from a stop light, you have to get the rpms up past that crappy zone, before you let the clutch out or else it will stall. EVERYWHERE else, its smooth as silk. Accelerates well, and Ive had it up to about 75 once and it was just purring. Once, I wound 2nd out and got on it hard and it ran it's little **** off, so it has no problem getting enough fuel when blowing down the road!

Come to think of it, if you pull off with the choke on, its nice since at that higher idle it does not bog. Following that, if I set the idle really high that would be the end of it, but I dont want to do that!

On anything else Ive ever worked on that has a carburetor (not fuel injected) this screams accelerator pump. I am in alien territory though, does this crazy carb have an accelerator pump?

Forgive my ignorance here, but it looks like a 4 barrel carb...and yet the previous owner told me he replaced the electric fuel pump recently. Is this throttle body injection or an honest to goodness carburetor with an electric fuel pump?

Any input or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
THanks,
Neil

My boat had a similar problem, (it has an old Volvo B21 4 cylinder in it) and I was able to actually adjust the accelerator pump so that it activated sooner...but that really didnt help that much. I wound up replacing the ignition coil with a hotter unit and putting new wires from the alternator to the battery and it went away. Thinking out loud here, but it gives me some ideas about the RX!

heck yes, I think that will be my first move...new performance coil and new wires for the battery/charging system. And plugs to boot.

I had the same problem so I adjusted the idle and now it accelerates fine but it idles around 1500 rpm.

Check the altenator cable the one that goes to the battery...I had that problem...it ran good and then it will cut off and it will drain your battery, run a cable from the battery to the alternator and put a 80 fuse at the battery end.

Yep, a 4 barrel with an electric fuel pump. Get a kit and rebuild that baby. You'll be glad you did.
