MI Carb rebuild is complete, now a new problem

With the help of an old school mechanic friend, the carb rebuild is complete on my bone stock 5 speed 1979 (8/78.) It runs much better, and is no longer leaking fuel from the accel. pump area. I am running 92 octane fuel for the first tank, with some seafoam as an additive. Under hard acceleration, the shift from 2nd to 3rd gives a three pop backfire everytime. It was not backfiring before the rebuild. Any suggestions of where to begin? Also, is there any reason to NOT use Seafoam directly into the carb? Thanks so much as I re-acquint myself with Gen 1.

Backfires generally come in 4 flavors, an exhaust leak, timing, the decelleration/coasting valve or a vacuum leak. Check to see if the coasting valve is still connected, then the entire exhaust system, vac leak/s finally timing. The following links are to the online FSMs along with the carb manual and other rotary related reading. The 79 is kind of an odd duck as it's the only 1st gen that still has points. Anytime one buys a new 7, we recommend a full atune up along with the full 30/60k service listed in both the FSM and owner's manual.

Enjoy. Be sure to read up on the FAQs at the beginning of the 1st gen tech section.

Btw, run 87 octane. NA rotarys actually run better on even lower octane, but that's not availible. Save the extra gas money for repairs.

Stop by Sterling's website and start reading. There is a plethora of information there on troubleshooting and tuning, and if all else fails try his forum and he'll help you walk through the troubleshooting process personally...

www.sterlingmetalworks.com

And if even that doesn't do the trick, bring it by and we'll see what we can do. Also, check out the midwest section of this forum. We have a meet and autocross coming up in May.
