very sloppy shifter

i just picked up an rx7 and the shifter does not return to center if you let it go

it kinda sounds odd to say but it angers me... would a new short shifter rod solve this? or am i sol? i'll probably have to replace the "return to center spring"and while i'm at it all new bushings. good idea? bad? hard? easy?

also i don't have fluid in the trans. i don't think it's an issue but i should say...

anyone know where i can pick this stuff up for cheap (i'm really cheap)

Many do have a shifter return spring, but that only moves the shifter back to center. If it is really a sloppy shifter then you probably need to replace the shifter bushings.

Check around for a shifter bushing kit, mine did that too. (S5 vert)
replace it all and you'll have the happy nice feeling again

it's both that it's sloppy and doesn't return to center...

i've been trying to check out the sponsors of the site but i had to get my 3 posts first...

You can find what you need here: http://www.mazdatrix.com/g4.htm. Call and ask them for assistance if you like. They can tell you which pieces you need.

However, I suspect that you will have to drop the transmission or at least drop it enough to remove the extension housing to replace the spring.

Just finished replacing bushings and boots this weekend. Took plenty of pics. There is another great thread in here on doing that. I may soon be adding posts to that thread to add to the knowledge base. Its hard to know sometimes what parts people are referring to without actually seeing it. PM me if you'd like copies of the pics before I add to the thread.

Oh I ordered the return spring too.....BEFORE I found out I'd have to drop the tranny to replace it. Its a bugger to get to!

hmmm no chance in hell i'm dropping the trans again! i just got it put in and i haven't driven the car yet!


i'll just do the short shifter and bushings hopefully i don't shift from 2 into 1 at 9000 on the track

ah fack.

well my shifter does the same thing. Replaced the bushings, but it wont return to the center. The tranny really needs to be dropped? wouldnt that mean the tranny was dropped to remove it?

i have the same problem with my 86 is there anywere else that is cheaper i really dont have 200$ to spend on this... any ideas?

There is a spring in the shifter housing that I've found broken in most of the trannys I've removed. Only way to replace it is to drop the tranny and follow the cryptic instructions in the tranny rebuild section of the FSM. Link to the online FSMs is in the provided link.

Btw, why in the hell are you pushing the engine to 9k. The stock engines aren't built for those rpms. If some idiot told you they are designed for that rpm, listen to someone else. Limit on a stock engine is around 8k for safety and wear factors After that, you accelerate the wear factor exponentionally. An engine can be built for those rpms, but that gets very expensive. I'm suprised you haven''t hit fuel cut, which kicks in around 7800 rpm. After that, you're past the useable shift point for the best ETs unless there have been some serious mods done.

where would be the best place to buy them at ebay has fair prices but would i be better off going to a auto parts store

Tranny needs to come out to replace the spring. Shifter bushings are on the shifter.

Get familiar with the major vendors, Racing Beat, Mazdatrix and BlackDragon for oem parts.
