CA Car wont start

Hi, I just bought an 88 rx7 turbo, it was driving fine for a week, than today I made a quick run to the supermarket and back now it wont start!

The car just turns over but wont start?

any help would be great.

Is it flooded?

Check for fuel.

Check for spark.

yeah these cars tend to flood very easily, under the dash theres a yellow plug, unplug it because thats the plug for your fp, and turn the engine several times, then it should start and run for a couple secs, then replug it and it should work bro it happens and this usually works for me = D

Define yellow plug please.

I see a black case, with a yellow "plug" inSIDE of it..And a white plug that plugs into it...I guess thats the one cuz when I unplugged it the "umph" died down..but it was the only yellow thing I saw under the dash.

I dunno why mine wont start...Its getting a little sputter every now and then...I unplugged the yellow thing and it didint sputter at all..

I unplugged another yellow plug under the air box and it stopped making any noise at all too..

How long do you turn these things over with the plugs undone! Im worried about burning out the starter motor now :-/

Was it a short run to the store? Like the engine didn't get a chance to fully warm up? If so, It is probably flooded as others have stated. Remove the two leading (lower) spark plugs, are they wet with fuel-oil? If so, leave the plugs out, remove the EGI fuse from the engine compartment fuse box, crank the engine over for 10 seconds with the gas pedal to the floor. Wait a few seconds and crank it again.

Then replace the EGI fuse and the spark plugs and start the car normally. Make sure you don't cross up the plug wires.

In the future, do not shut the car down--EVER--until the engine is fully warmed up. Like don't back it out of the garage for instance and immediately shut it down. That is, unless you enjoy de-flooding the engine.

You might want to do a compression check also since low engine compression will exacerbate the flooding problem.

Thre are two EGI fuses..the EGI comp or EGI inj?

I think I might be having the same problem

take out the EGI-inj fuse and unplug your distributor then crank it a few times.

Theres a distributor??? O.O.

I thought the coils were just fired by the computer

If your cars newer then yeah its fired by coils, Just unplug the switch with the five wires under the dash thats one of the fuel pump relays, and just turn it over at full throttle, when the car kicks and starts up for a sec then plug it back in, and it should fire right up. don't bother unpluging anything else for the fuel pump, that plug is all you need, if you car kicks when its plugged in and does nothing at all with it unplugged then it sounds like your car isn't getting enough gas, with every thing plugged in for the pump have you tried jumping the fuel pump check plug on the passenger side struht tower its yellow too with two slots???

Okay I got it started by push starting? none of the unpluging things worked, I drove it until it warmed up than parked it, tried to start it this mourning and it almost went but than died, I think I may have drained the battery with all my deflooding efforts? any thoughts?

Ok I had/have the same problem and this is what I did and it is doing good. I don't know if all rx7 has it but I have like a switch that you can just pull down and you will disconnect the fuel pump. What I do is when your done driving don't turn of the car what you do is turn the witch down that disconnects the fuel pomp and then the car will turn of itself. when it is turned of then you can turn the key to off and when you want to start the car put the switch for the fuel pump back up like connecting it and then put your feet on gas but just a little and then try turning the car on. Nothing else worked for me but this did it. Maybe you will have to get used to how much gas you have to put. But remember to turn of the car with the fuel pomp switch and not the car key itself. Since this is a flooding topic, I might as well post the causes for flooding:

1. Short starts
2. Poor tune
3. Worn injectors
4. Low compression

Number 1 and 2 are easy to correct. Avoid short starts and make sure the car is in good tune (ie. new plugs, wires, filters, check sensors, adjust TPS, etc.).

3 is a very common cause. Most communities have an injection shop which can service your injectors and bring them back to new condition. Check the Yellow Pages for "Injection service". Cost is generally about $20 per injector. Note that this is not the same thing as over the counter injector cleaner, which is a waste of time/money.

Reason #4 speaks for itself.
