Car starts but shuts off immediately

Hey everyone! working on a project car my grandma gave me and just a young kid, 87 Rx-7, its been sitting for 10+ years in a garage. It in perfect condition. I've replaced the air filter, fuel filter, oil, oil filter, new gas and the car will start up perfectly and then shut off, seeking some help from the masters lol. Thank you!

welcome to the board.

congrats on the FC. post an Intro thread when you get a minute, would love to hear about your story and see some photos of the '87.

here is where you can get a free digital copy of the FSM: Foxed.ca

as for your issue, my first thought is you probably have a vacuum leak somewhere. you can also check and make sure your AFM is plugged in and secured.

I would also agree on the issue likely being caused by a large vacuum leak. Things to look for would be a loose intake tube from the mass airflow meter to the throttle body, a bad or improperly secured BACV hose or any other vacuum lines and hoses on the dynamic chamber.

As stated above, check the connector at the mass airflow meter to ensure its clean and secure.

I think we got a fuel problem, the car will start but wont idle and no acceleration, cannot hear a fuel pump hum when I turn the key, I will check out the fuel relay, pump, and where is the fuse located on an 87' rx7 fc?

Just so you’re aware in case you didn’t know, the FC fuel pump does not “prime” with the key one like you may be familiar with on a piston engine. The fuel pump relay engages when the key is turned to START and then once the vehicle is running via a switch in the AFM. This is why previous recommendations advised to confirm the AFM is connected.

But I also have no acceleration when its started and it doesn't run for long it runs for like 10 seconds then stalls, that's why I thought it was the fuel pump. But it starts up so there is fuel getting there so what the heck is goin on.

locate the air filter box and remove it. the AFM is attached to the bottom part of it.

there is a test procedure outlined in the FSM

yes, that’s your Air Flow Meter (AFM). The door should move very freely. When the car is running the engine will draw a vacuum and that flapper door position will translate to a variable voltage fed back to the ECU.

you can try and clean it to free it up.
