Car dies after revving at 3k for 30 seconds

Ok so I've been using this site for months now so I know a decent amount but still a bit confused. I know it supposed to idle and then drop down to 1500 and the as it warms up to 750-800rpms. However after putting on a new eBay exhaust( old one was rusty and had many holes) it goes from 3k to stall unless I add some gas. Now I have used the variable resistor to bring the idle down to 800 or 750 and I could raise it but I'd rather have it be at what it should be. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

A vacuum leak could do this.

I didn't touch those though. I just did the exhaust and it didn't happen prior to that.
