bringina a sleeping 82 back to life
i just purchased my first rotary, an 82 fb yesterday. its been sitting a very long tim so i was wondering what needed to be done in order to bring it back to life. the engine turns freely
Replace fluids and spark plugs. It may have a stuck seal or two from sitting for a while, so putting some Marvel Mystery Oil or ATF in the combustion chamber and turning the engine by hand then letting it sit for a little will help free and stuck seals. Do that a few times and try starting it up. You may have to rebuild the carb though. Oh, and make sure your battery is good. I hope it starts right up for you!

welcome to the board.
1. how long is a very long time?
2. you'll want to go through the entire car and check for any significant damage (chewed wires, rotted lines, etc.)
3. you will want to get parts for a complete tune up
4. you may have to drain and drop the fuel tank (play that by ear unless you just want to do it)
5. clean the carb thoroughly ... consider adding a second filter just before it
6. how many pulses are you getting when you turn it over by hand?
7. DO NOT use ATF in the chambers. put some motor oil in them and if it comes to it, use some Seafoam.

2 will do
3 will do
4 will most likely do
5 probably rebuilding it
6 didnt check last time, ill let you know the next time i spin it. what am i looking for?
7 i will try some oil
if you are going through the trouble of rebuilding the carburetor, then i would suggest taking the time to do the tank as well. if the tank is all full of nasty crap, filter or not, it makes sense to avoid running it through your rebuilt carbie.
you're looking for 6 distinct "whooshing" sounds per full rotation - 3 from each chamber. ideally, they should be strong and even. however, if they are not, it may mean something ominous, or it may not. you'd have to fire it and run it to know for sure.
