bought an fc for $300... having some issues

Hey I just bought an fc for $300 bucks the guy needed the money fast to move out. And it's having some issues. Sometime's it will smoke on cold start up than when its warm the smoke will go away. Most of the time it wont smoke. And the Check engline comes on at idle goes away when I gas the car. The car doesn't overheat and has good power to it. Anyone know what the issue can be? Thank you

The smoke on cold startup is rather normal. Have you changed the oil in it since you got it? I would recommend you do so if you haven't. Valvoline 20w-50 works wonders.

IA

I have a similar issue with my 88 NA.
From what I have read, the issue is that coolant is leaking into the engine. (Bad internal seal) When you start the car, the coolant is spread around and most of it is exhausted and is then layin about in the headers and such...engine/headers/exhaust get hot=sweet smelly thick smoke.
My issue got progressively worse over about a 1 month period(more and more smoke on start-up).
Car still runs great but... I have stopped driving mine and am planning a rebuild.

thanks for all the replies. the smoke is really heavy sometimes and it hurts my throat. and i did an oil change on it too. the smoke is enough to hide the car only sometimes that's what i don't get.

Well if it's oil that is burning, here is a trick I have done to keep one of my FCs with blown oil seals still running like a champ after 6 years...

Change your oil with:
4 Quarts of Valvoline VR 50 (some of the best non-synthetic oil you can buy)
2 Bottles of STP oil treatment.

This will dramatically cut down on the amount of oil related smoke.

If your smoking is in fact oil related.

Do you have any pics of the car. I would love to see what kind of cosmetic shape it's in. Great buy bro!

If it's cold then thats normal. Always do a oil change when you first get you're fc. GL.

Soooo, did you pull codes yet? It will take 2 minutes. If the check engine light ever comes on, you really ought to see what's failing before it becomes an issue.
