Best clutch for a streetported engine
Best clutch for a streetported engine
I'm having my 1986GXL Street ported, I was wondering what would be the best sport\racing clutch and fly wheel I can buy? The market is flooded with clutches and choosing one is no easy task. Please help.
You choose a clutch by how much flywheel torque the engine makes and what you intend to use the car for. If it's street-driven, you should be sticking with something close to stock. An organic disk will be fine. NA 2-rotor engines don't make much torque. If you want to go with a lightweight flywheel, keep in mind that it will become more difficult to smoothly engage the clutch from a stop & RPMs will drop quicker when you left off the throttle (less inertia).
Its getting an agressive street port. So I was looking for a stage two. Any name brands come to mind? It has msd blaster 2 coils and a gpi racing radiator. Allong with the porting the pullies and injectors are also being switched I just want to get max torque out of my ride. Johnynyc is doing my build he is also switching out all seals and rotors.
Anything short of building a custom intake manifold along with bridge or p-ports will not make a whole lot more torque than stock. Enlarging the ports allows more flow at high-RPM, where torque would normally drop off. The torque curve can just extend further, but peak torque will likely stay very similar.
As I said before, I would stick to a organic disk similar to stock. The Exedy stg. 1 here would be more than enough: Clutches 83-92 (225mm non-turbo). Do not use a puck clutch.
If you change injectors, you need to have some way to control the fuel. Stock 460cc injectors are good for power in the low 200 whp range, so most ported engines will not need anything more than stock.
