NC alternator pulley question (87 t2)

Search'd and found a bunch of threads about taking off the alternator pulley. This seems to boil down to either using an impact gun, or putting the pulley in a vise and taking a breaker bar to it.

My quesiton is, what about putting it back on? Since the pulley is not keyed to the shaft or anyth, it seems like the vise method (in reverse, to install pulley) would lead to the nut spinning the shaft and never really being able to get it tightened down. Is impact gun the preferred method for this? Does the vise method turn out to work fine, and I'm all worried about nothing? I don't have an impact gun, but could track one down if needed.

Thanks in advance! Picking up a new alt in a bit here, and need to put my 2row pulley on. Btw, car is an 87 turbo.

What worked for me was to hold the pulley with one hand and hit the nut with the impact. Mechanics' gloves are obviously a good thing if you'd like to keep the skin on your hand. Hold it firmly, so it'll be tight enough when the impact spins the pulley out of your hand. Not sure of the proper spec offhand (check the FSM), but this should be tight enough.

That's what I do when removing and reinstalling the pulley on both a FD alt and Taurus alt. I use a Harbor Freight electric impact wrench rated for 240ft.lbs

Thanks man. I ended up going to a garage and getting them to do it w/ impact gun - took them like 10 seconds.
